Roger Rosengarten 2024 NFL DRAFT SCOUTING REPORT

STRENGTHS

  • Effective kick-slide in pass protection with balanced knee bend and a good base. At times used hands effectively.
  • Some vertical set snaps in which he showed efficient movement with clean footwork and excellent balance.
  • Pass protection reps in which he was aggressive and proactive with his hands striking to control the rusher.
  • Re-set his hands in pass protection to maintain control of the rep. Regained technique and balance to win.
  • Grip strength is a foundation of his pass protection profile. Controlled rushers once he latched on with his hands.
  • Pass protection snaps with excellent awareness and accelerated vision when recognizing and reacting to stunts.
  • Strength in pass protection was competitiveness and toughness but also sound technically with hand usage.
  • Featured as down blocker play-side in gap scheme run game and was consistently effective sealing DT inside.
  • Effective climbing to second level in run game with excellent awareness, balance and body control to strike.
  • Did an excellent job in run game, lining up and striking landmarks with balance and body control.
  • Used at times as puller across formation in gap scheme run game and showed balance to strike on the move.
  • Outstanding playing personality. Played with high-level competitiveness. Battled and fought on every snap.

WEAKNESSES

  • Limited athlete with slow feet lacking fluid movement. Too often he had to work hard to stay in phase to pass protect.
  • Struggled at times in pass protection with balance and body control issues. Lost his balance too many times.
  • Showed some susceptibility to speed-to-power pass rush. Too many times was driven back into the pocket.

NFL TRANSITION

Rosengarten was one of the more challenging tackles to evaluate because at times there was a wide variance in his play approach and his athletic traits. There were times Rosengarten looked like a limited athlete who succeeded with high-level competitiveness and mental and physical toughness. Other times he looked smooth and comfortable in pass protection with an efficient kick-slide and excellent balance and body control.

What consistently stood out in pass protection is that Rosengarten was active and calculated with his hand usage. There were reps in which his grip strength was a defining feature to control edge pass rushers. Rosengarten featured an aggressive approach to pass protection, often attacking pass rushers rather than allowing them to gain space and attack him. That approach was part of a varied plan that featured different techniques depending on the opponent and the specific pass set.

In the run game, Rosengarten was effective as both a down blocker and working to the second level where he showed enough athleticism and mobility to strike linebackers. Overall the more I watched Rosengarten, the more I liked his tape. The variety of pass sets he can call on and his effective hand usage will help him develop into a quality starter with coaching and experience.

Other Notes

Rosengarten started all 28 games in his final two seasons at Washington. He came out of Colorado as the No. 9 offensive tackle prospect in the nation.
