Chris Long is a former NFL defensive end who played with the St. Louis Rams, New England Patriots and Philadelphia Eagles from 2008-2018. He was an All-Rookie player (2008), an NFL Alumni Lineman of the Year (2011) and the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year (2018)—an award he won after donating his entire 2017 NFL salary to charity.
Long was a member of the Super Bowl LI and Super Bowl LII title teams, first winning the championship with the New England Patriots for the 2016 season, then repeating with the Philadelphia Eagles. He is one of the few players in NFL history to win Super Bowls in consecutive years for different teams.
He joined the Rams as the second overall pick in the 2008 NFL Draft. The top defensive player picked that year, Long entered the pros after a stellar career at the University of Virginia, where he excelled as a pass rushing end. Not only was he was a two-time All-ACC choice, Long made All American teams twice. The 2007 season was a banner year for Long, as he also took home ACC Defensive Player of the Year, the Dudley Award for the top collegiate football player in the Commonwealth of Virginia, and the Ted Hendricks Award as the nation’s top defensive end. Long’s No. 91 jersey has been retired by the University of Virginia.
Throughout his career, Long played for a who’s who of defensive masterminds, including Bill Belichick, Jeff Fisher, Al Groh, Jim Haslett, Steve Spagnuolo, Gregg Williams, Jim Schwartz and others.
Long finished his career with 329 tackles, 70 sacks and 14 forced fumbles.
A native of California, Long moved to Charlottesville, Virginia in grade school and graduated from St. Anne's-Belfield School, where he was a four-sport star (football, basketball, baseball and lacrosse). In 2003, he led his school to an undefeated record and a state championship before playing in the 2004 US Army All-American game.
Chris is the son of Hall of Fame defensive end Howie Long and the brother of NFL guard Kyle Long. He is also the godson of Hall of Fame quarterback Terry Bradshaw.
Long lives in Charlottesville with his wife and two sons. He hosts the “Green Light Podcast” and operates The Chris Long Foundation, which prioritizes raising money for clean water access and educational equity across the globe.
