Chase Young Likely to Miss Start of Season

Washington Commanders star edge rusher Chase Young likely is going to miss the start of the regular season, Head Coach Ron Rivera announced to the media today. Young is coming off an ACL injury that ended his 2021 season in week 10 against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

Young was drafted second overall by Washington in the 2020 NFL Draft and his presence was felt immediately. He recorded 7.5 sacks, 10 TFL and a combined seven forced fumbles and fumble recoveries on his way to winning defensive rookie of the year. He was a critical piece of a team that won the NFC East his rookie season.

Young’s 2021 season was off to a slow start before his ACL injury. He had just 1.5 sacks up to that point. His injury came just as he started to turn a corner, but now his 2022 season might be be off to a slow start too.

When Rivera spoke to the media he mentioned Young’s ACL injury was “a little more severe” than other ACL injuries. He didn’t expand further, but this has happened with players before.

Every injury is unique and until there are further details on the exact nature of the difficulties that Young is facing it is hard to speculate when we may see him this season.

For now, Young will remain on the Active/PUP list. In his absence, the Commanders will rely upon fellow first-round pick Montez Sweat, who is beginning to emerge as a prominent edge rusher in his own right.

The Commanders would love nothing more than for him to step up while Young is out so when he is back, they have one of the best edge rushing combinations in the league.
