Grading Every New York Giants Position Group Going into 2022
New York has suffered through five straight losing seasons, but with a new front office and coaching staff in place, they will be looking to turn it around.
Below, we break down the Giants’ roster:
QB: Daniel Jones, Tyrod Taylor, Davis Webb
Grade: B-
Explanation: Daniel Jones has been very inconsistent in terms of his production and health throughout his career. He will get at least one more chance with the Giants this season and should improve given the new staff. Tyrod Taylor has been a good starter in the past, so he will be a formidable backup if Jones does not perform. The group will completely depend on how well Jones plays.
RB: Saquon Barkley, Matt Breida, Gary Brightwell, Jashaun Corbin, Antonio Williams, Sandro Platzgummer
Grade: B+
Explanation: When healthy, Saquon Barkley is up there with some of the most talented RBs in the league. However, thanks to health and inconsistent OL play, Barkley has not returned to his rookie-year self. Matt Breida comes in from Buffalo with speed to add depth, but the group relies on the play of Barkley.
WR: Kenny Golladay, Sterling Shepard, Kadarius Toney, Wan’Dale Robinson, Darius Slayton, C.J. Board, James Richie, Collin Johnson, David Sills V, Travis Toivonen, Keelan Doss, Alex Bachman, Robert Foster, Austin Proehl
Grade: B
Explanation: The WR position has been one of, if not, the most invested in on the roster. Between Shepard, Golladay, Toney, and Robinson, this group is made up of all first and second-round picks, as well as expensive FA signings. This group is certainly talented but due to health and other positions on the offense, the WR group has not played as well as they should. The group’s grade can easily increase based on their performance.
TE: Daniel Bellinger, Ricky Seals-Jones, Jordan Akins, Chris Myarick, Austin Allen, Andre Miller, Jeremiah Hall
Grade: C-
Explanation: Evan Engram was not always perfect but the void he leaves on his way to Jacksonville will certainly be felt, as he was still a talented pass-catcher. Replacing him is Ricky Seals-Jones, who started 6 games in Washington last year, and 2022 4th-round pick, Daniel Bellinger.
OL: Andrew Thomas, Evan Neal, Shane Lemieux, Jon Feliciano, Mark Glowinski, Joshua Ezeudu, Matt Gono, Marcus McKethan, Jamil Douglas, Max Garcia, Devery Hamilton, Ben Bredeson, Nick Gates, Josh Rivas, Korey Cunningham, Matt Peart, Roy Mbaeteka
Grade: B
Explanation: Over the past few seasons, the OL has been a weaker group on this roster. However, in 2022, although unproven, the group has the potential to be very successful. They have their bookends and OT for years to come with Andrew Thomas and Evan Neal. The interior will still need to prove they can hold up, but New York brought in Jon Feliciano and Mark Glowinski, which should make a difference.
DL: Leonard Williams, Dexter Lawrence, Justin Ellis, Azeez Ojulari, Kayvon Thibodeaux, Elerson Smith, Jihad Ward, David Moa, DJ Davidson, Jalyn Holmes, Quincy Roche, Oshane Ximines, Jabari Ellis, Christopher Hinton, Ryder Anderson, Tomon Fox
Grade: A-
Explanation: This is perhaps the strongest group on the entire team and one that will be key for the entire defense. New York now has two young talented pass rushers in Ojulari and Thibodeaux. The Giants are also strong on the interior with Leonard Williams and Dexter Lawrence. The NT position and depth pieces are the biggest things holding this unit back.
LB: Blake Martinez, Tae Crowder, Micah McFadden, Darrian Beavers, Cam Brown, Carter Coughlin
Grade: C
Explanation: The LB group has been one that New York has had a hard time filling. Martinez was alright in his first year with the team but missed almost all of last season, so his return will be helpful. The other LB spot will require someone else on the roster to step up, which will be the biggest question mark.
CB: Adoree’ Jackson, Aaron Robinson, Darnay Holmes, Rodarius Williams, Michael Jacquet III, Cor’Dale Flott, Maurice Canady, Zyon Gilbert, Khalil Dorsey, Darren Evans
Grade: C+
Explanation: Due to the salary cap, New York had to cut their best CB and arguably the best player in James Bradberry. New York still has Adoree' Jackson who played well for the most part last season. That said, the unit’s performance will depend on the play of the young corners Aaron Robinson and Darnay Holmes.
S: Xavier McKinney, Julian Love, Dane Belton, Jarren Williams, Henry Black, Yusuf Corker, Trenton Thompson
Grade: B-
Explanation: Xavier McKinney performed well last year and should continue to improve. Like the LB and CB groups, the safeties will need a younger and more inexperienced player like Julian Love to step up.
