Notable NFL Waiver Wire Claims, Plus Other Team Moves and Injuries
Following Tuesday's roster cutdown to 53, NFL teams are making a flurry of moves, attempting to use their final days before the start of the regular season to reinforce their talent pool and add depth.
One of the biggest moves saw the Minnesota Vikings trade for Philadelphia Eagles wide receiver Jalen Reagor, who was famously drafted one selection before current Viking Justin Jefferson. Now, the two will play together on the same team. A day later, Russell Wilson signed one of the richest contracts in NFL history with the Denver Broncos, tying him to the franchise for most, or all, of his remaining seasons in the league.
Here's a look at some of the more notable transactions:
Harold Landry Tears ACL
Tennessee Titans pass rusher Harold Landry tore his ACL at practice on Wednesday and will miss the entire 2022 season, according to ESPN's Adam Schefter. This is a tough blow for the Titans, as Landry had just signed a five-year, $87.5 million contract in March.
Titans Give RB Derrick Henry a $2 Million Raise
The Titans have given Henry an extra $2 million for the 2022 season, bringing his salary to $14 million. The final year of his contract is still 2023, according to NFL Media. It isn't often players get a raise without signing a new contract. Julio Jones received multiple raises from the Falcons, but it doesn't happen on a regular basis.
Texans Sign O.J. Howard
The Houston Texans signed tight end O.J. Howard, according to PFF's Ari Meirov. Howard was a first-round pick of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers in 2017, but injuries and inconsistent play prevented him from cementing a long-term role there. He signed with the Buffalo Bills this offseason but was cut when the team trimmed its roster down to 53 players. The Texans placed tight end Teagan Quitoriano on Injured Reserve Thursday, so Howard makes sense as a depth addition.
