Patriots Hire Jerod Mayo As New Head Coach
The New England Patriots have hired inside linebackers coach Jerod Mayo as the franchise's new head coach, succeeding Bill Belichick.
Mayo, a former first-round pick of the Patriots in 2008, spent his entire playing career in New England. He became the team's inside linebackers coach in 2019 and has held that position for five years, coaching under Belichick. At 37, he becomes the youngest head coach in the NFL, overtaking a title Sean McVay has held since 2017.
New England adjusted Mayo's contract last year to contain a head-coach succession clause that would enable the Patriots to promote him quickly to replace Belichick without conducting interviews to comply with the NFL's Rooney Rule.
The Patriots are likely to begin a search next for a new head of football operations, a job Belichick also held during his 24-year run as coach. The Patriots mutually parted ways with Belichick earlier this week after 24 seasons and six Super Bowl championships.
