Scouting Report: Aidan Hutchinson, EDGE, Michigan
Build - Does he have prototype size? What is body type? What is growth potential?
Built like a 3-4 DE who can play the 5. Very long arms which he uses well. Has the frame to get up to 300lbs if you want to push him inside
Mental - Is he instinctual? Does he play with urgency?
Plays a physical style (though not "Nasty"). Uses the bull-rush as his main move. Michigan plays a line control system where he won't push vertical often but plays his gap/edge well. high motor
Athleticism - Does he have the athletic traits you want?
Has a big strong frame and good strength. He is adequate out of his stance and only uses hand swipes as a finesse move when not bull-rushing. Uses his length to disengage from blocks. Very stiff hips and poor change of direction. Will not bend around the edge
Technical - Does he have a refined skill set? Is he a projection or is his game developed enough to contribute early?
If drafting as a 3-4 defensive end who plays the 5 he is a good prospect who plays strong, with heavy hands and the ability to shed blocks and overpower tight-ends/RBs who are asked to block him. When asked to rush or play past the 5 on the outside his athletisism limits his play as he doesn't have the bend to peel around the tackle and will miss tackles against athletic QBs and most RBs
Summary - What role does he play? What is his initial projection?
Hutchinson is an edge player with great size and length (6'6" 269 lbs). He plays a physical play style and explodes out of his stance with adequate athleticism but uses heavy hands and strength to push around blockers. A strong player in the run game he can shed blocks mostly with rips or strength to get past blockers. His athleticism is limited if trying to track down top tier athletes but has a high motor when in pursuit. Projects as a 3-4 DE or a 4-3 DE
