Wheeler's Week 9 Fantasy Football Rankings

TJ Hockenson Week 9 Fantasy Football Rankings

For those that don't know, I am, first and foremost, a high school economics and accounting teacher. Throughout the years, there have been an increasing number of students that play fantasy football. Now dozens of students ask me for waiver and trade advice, usually to get me off task during instruction, but this week I didn't mind at all.

Every analyst is now talking about how crazy this trade deadline was but watching most of it unfold in my accounting class was pretty unique. I don't have any of the apps on my phone that most fantasy players have because most of the updates pushed out are trivial, and I don't need the interruption in my day. My students have the apps, though, and they had no problem letting me know as soon as the floodgates opened with the plethora of trades that went down.

The main story we had lined up for this week is the "Bye-pocolypse," with six teams having their bye-week in Week 9. The Dallas Cowboys, San Francisco 49ers, New York Giants, Denver Broncos, Cleveland Browns and Pittsburgh Steelers not playing this week. So, we're going to need to get creative.

Week 9 Rankings

Check this link throughout the week and on Sunday morning for the latest updates.

When examining these rankings, consider I am really only looking at positional ranks, not flex or overall rankings. When it comes to who you start in the flex, a lot will depend on your specific league rules and roster construction. If players are ranked within three spots of each other, the difference between them is negligible. They are expected to score the same amount of points; in those cases, go to our Discord.

Quarterback

Kirk Cousins, Patrick Mahomes, Kyler Murray and Justin Fields each got a new toy.

Running Back

Last week, I glanced over the Christian McCaffrey trade because it only downgraded Jeff Wilson and probably delayed the return of Elijah Mitchell. McCaffrey remains a top-three running back most weeks; playing for San Francisco should undoubtedly allow him to reach his ceiling more often but could expose him to a greater chance of injury. On the other hand, Wilson's trade to Miami puts him back on the fantasy radar.

Many analysts believe the trade from the Colts to the Buffalo Bills makes Nyheim Hines a must-add if he's on your waiver wire. I just think it makes him a sell-high. I don't see how he gets many touches in this offense. How many designed dump-offs do we really think the Bills will add to their offensive scheme?

On the other side of the trade, Zack Moss probably doesn't hinder Deon Jackson's role as the primary handcuff to Jonathan Taylor.

In my opinion, the James Robinson trade from the Jaguars to the New York Jets was also reasonably insignificant. The injury to Breece Hall opened up touches in the backfield that Michael Carter fans hoped would fall to him, but the Jets will continue with a split backfield, giving Robinson a solid share of the first and second-down rushing work.

Rest of Season Rankings

Before I started ranking players and writing about fantasy, I would search for analysts' "Rest of Season" rankings. At the time, few people were actually doing that, so when I started writing, it became a large part of my process. Rest of Season rankings help me with waiver wire or free-agent pick-ups before Sunday game-time.
